! >> bill: we're bringing him back. mitt romney lying through his teeth about g.m. and chrysler! and got caught. but first -- >> this is the "full court press." >> on this thursday, other headlines making news, kelsey grammer raised eyebrows when he and his wife brought their 3-month-old daughter to hugh hefner's halloween party at the playboy mansion. he released a statement after a picture of the baby went viral online. he said his wife is breast-feeding and they don't have a nanny or a trusted baby-sitter. >> bill: 3 years? >> 3 months. daughter faith goes everywhere with them. she was asleep during the whole party. there were not any problems. >> bill: i don't have a problem with that. 3-month-old. come on. as if that baby is going to remember and be traumatized by being at the playboy mansion. >> the press pool on air force i was caught off-guard yesterday. the president's plane was not stocked with m&ms. the peanut chocolate candy is a regular staple on the aircraft. especially designed white boxe
of chrysler and g.m. mad at you in the same day this is like an eight-car pileup. it just goes to the whole issue of romney being almost allergic to the truth on some of the issues. >> jennifer: totally. >> i think it is huge. >> jennifer: and i want to play just a snippet of that ad to remind our viewers who may not have caught up with that yet. let's watch this for just a sec. >> announcer: who will do more for the auto industry? not barack obama. fact checkers confirm his attacks on mitt romney are false. the truth? mitt romney has a plan to help the auto industry. >> jennifer: you know what kills me is this airs in ohio. ohio knows very well where mitt romney stood on -- >> the guy painted himself as a son of the auto industry and when you have the head of g.m. today saying this belies everything apparently he knows nothing about the way cars are marketed. i think it is very, very damaging and this is an ad that's been called pants on fire. >> jennifer: four pinocchios. there is another issue that's
lie. earlier this week, chrysler's parent company announced that it's in talks to increase operations throughout the entire world. now as bloomberg news reported chrysler referred to adding jeep production sites rather than shifting output from north america to china. translation, chrysler is so flushed with cash they are looking to expand operations to other countries including the world's largest customer. today chrysler announced 1100 new jobs at its jeep assembly plant in detroit, michigan. but wait a minute, mitt romney he didn't say anything about that. you see mitt romney would be talking about job creation then and that's something he says that barack obama doesn't know anything about. chrysler responded to this controversy. i want you to pay close attention to what a corporation said about what mitt romney said. first they start out saying, let's set the record straight. jeep has no intention of shifting production of its jeep models out of north america to china. it's simply reviewing the opportunities to return jeep output to china for the world's largest auto market. u.s.
and the detroit news. obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. megyn: stu varney walks us through facts and fix with one of the hottest topics on the campaign trail with five days to go. new york city commuters enduring hours and hours -- normally we have an hour, hour and a half commute, that is not unusual for new yorkers. we are talking four, five hour commutes in bumper-to-bumper traffic to get in and do their jobs. like everyone else in the country the folks that work in manhattan need their paychecks. we are seeing vehicles packing the gas stations that still have fuel. some waiting in lines that are miles long but patients is not long it is short and it is getting shorter by the day. trace gallagher following the traffic nightmare, trace. >> reporter: before i show you more of the crazy pictures megyn and they are crazy i want to give you the problem in a nutshell, the new york metro area gets 25% of its gas from two refineries, those refineries are shut down. the new york harbor 20% comes through the new york harb
and chrysler will move jobs to china, a claim that chrysler has denied. romney spoke last hour in new hampshire, sharpening his attack on obama, and he's all but declared victory. he even called the event a victory rally. >> when i'm president, it's going to be very clear that we finally have an administration and a president and a government in the united states that actually likes job creators, that wants to help job creators. >> romney called yesterday's jobs report a sad reminder that unemployment is essentially unchanged at 7.9%. while the obama campaign touted the 171,000 jobs added with improved numbers in september and august. we have our correspondents spread throughout the battleground states to bring you the latest on the election and the final push for both candidates. dan lothian is in ohio where the president will speak next hour. dan, good morning. how is president obama handling the post-sandy power outages and flooding on the campaign trail? it's a difficult balance, i'm sure, between the two. >> reporter: you make a really good point, because the president is still trying to m
and the "detroit news." obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> i'm mitt romney and i approve this message. >> despite chrysler's flat-out denial of romney's china claim, the romney campaign took his lie a step further today with this radio ad in toledo, ohio, which is home to a jeep plant. >> barack obama says he saved the auto industry, but for who? ohio or china? under president obama, gm cut 15,000 american jobs, but they're planning to double the number of cars built in china which means 15,000 more jobs for china. and now comes word that chrysler plans to start making jeeps in, you guessed it, china. what happened to the promises made to autoworkers in toledo and throughout ohio? >> that provoked general motors spokesman to release this statement "we've clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days. no amount of campaign politics at its since call worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the u.s. and repatriating profits back to this coun
's been running an ad that says so. except it's not true. >> brown: chrysler has said it has no plans to move the jobs. the romney campaign insists it's standing by its claim. there promised to be much more battling over economic policy, with the race in a dead heat and going down to the wire. we look now at the jobs picture with two economists with ties to the presidential candidates: john taylor of stanford university and the hoover institution. he advises the romney campaign on economic issues. and austan goolsbee of the university of chicago's booth school of business. he served as president obama's chairman of the council of economic advisers until last year. to the extent mob set aside the rhetoric of the campaign if you can for a moment, tell us about the bigger picture. what strikes you most, what worries you most about the jobs picture now and in the coming years? >> well, i would say any reputable economist says every month don't just take any one month numbers, try to take a step back and look at the trend that's far more accurate in this. i think if you look at the trend t
federal relief, mitt romney is now claiming that he -- not president obama saved g.m. and chrysler. can you believe it? mitt romney ought to burn in hell for that lie. he keeps telling it. we'll tell you why that's wrong and a whole lot more here plus bring you all of the latest on the impact of hurricane sandy. right here on the "full court press." but first, we take a little time out as always to get the latest, today's current news update from lisa ferguson standing by in los angeles. good morning lisa. >> hey bill. good morning everyone. hurricane sandy not only is taking an impact on the east coast but it is also putting a twist in the political schedule today. we are just one week out from the election. neither candidate is campaigning as planned. president obama is staying in d.c. to monitor the storm and help prep for any disaster relief. mitt romney is also putting a stop to his events saying it is out of sensitivity for the millions of people in sandy's path. romney did have events scheduled today in o
that focuses on chrysler building jeeps in china. now we learned a bit about that from stu varney yesterday. in a moment we will have the truth and the fiction in the fight over this controversial message. as of today for a moment now, though we are going to listen to president obama out making his final argument on the campaign trail. >> we see neighbors helps neighbors cope with tragedy. we see leaders of different political parties working to fix what's broken, not to score political points. we see a spirit that says no matter how bad a storm is, no matter how tough times are, we are going to make it because we are all in this together. [cheers and applause] >> we rise and fall as one nation and as one people. [cheers and applause] >> and that spirit, ohio has guided this country along its improbable journey for more than two centuries, and it's also guided us and carried us through the trials and tribulations of the last four years. in 2008 we were in the middle of two wars and the worst economic crisis since the great depression. today our businesses have created nearly 5 pine 5 millio
, false, what he just said. chrysler which was bought by fiat said it's not taking any jobs from ohioans, it's adding jobs. also plans on resuming jeep production in china for chinese drivers. in other words, overseas production, overseas sales. not moving jobs from the united states to china. then comes this whopper of a romney ad. customarily when one of the campaigns launch a commercial, they send us press releases and video. not this one. this started running unannounced in ohio and suggests again that jobs are moving to china. >> who will do more for the auto industry? not barack obama. fact-checkers confirm his attacks on mitt romney are false. the truth? mitt romney has a plan to help the auto industry. he's supported by lee iacocca and the "detroit news." obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> they're not backing down, of course. they're also running misleading radio ads on the same topic. in cities like dayton and toledo. michael steele is the former chairma
.m. and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians who will build jeeps in china. chct republicans are liars. now i don't say that flippantly or say it because i'm partisan. anybody who watches the show knows i've got a lot of issues with democrats. i say it because it's true. it is demonstrably true. now a lot of the rest of the media says well, no, no, no, if i say the republicans lie from time to time, i have to say the democrats lie from time to time and i have to call it even but it ain't even! so mitt romney is in a lot of trouble in states like ohio because he wanted to let detroit go bankrupt and there is a lot of jobs that were affected in ohio. and those folks might not have jobs if we went in mitt romney's direction. s what's he going to do before the election? he's going to have highly deceptive ads running in ohio like this one about chrysler. >> announcer: barack obama said he saved the auto industry but for who? ohio or china? under president obama g.m. cut 15,000 americans jobs. but the
, the numbers, the at least from chrysler, they felt so compelled about what mitt romney was saying on the campaign trail that they issued a statement to say, not only are they not moving jobs to china, in fact, the company has nuns announced plans to hire an additional 12,000 workers in detroit. that will contradict what you say are concerns about auto workers? >> i don't see it as a contradiction at all. i think it is a testament to american ingeneral new at this time that people move forward to manufacture in this country. epa and government regulators are making it more and more difficult every single day. this is what we hear from so many of our manufacturers, large and small. >> let me really quickly play for you a clip that the president -- from the president's interview with joe and mica over the weekend. >> there's no doubt that the first order of business is to get our deficits and debt under control. the good thing is there's a forcing mechanism. the bush tax cuts end at end of the year. we have the sequester looming. that wouldn't be the right way to do thing, takes a ma
in the auto plant. it paid off in tow leado where chrysler's adding 1,000 new jobs on the second shift. not in china. right here in ohio. right here in the united states of america. and so one of the things i hope when you're talking to your friends and your neighbors, they're trying to make up their minds these last few days, think about that. think about the issue of trust. think about, you know, do you want a president who's going to tell you what he believes or what he thinks or someone who's going to -- no, who's going to -- well, change the facts. after four years as president, you know me. you may not agree with every decision i've made. you may be frustrated sometimes at the pace of change. but you know what i believe. you know where i stand. you know i tell the truth. you know that i fight for you and your families every single day as hard as i know how. you know that. and -- and you know that i know what real change looks like because i fought for real change. and you've helped me every step of the way. after all we've been through together, we can't give up on real change no
of general motors and chrysler which in all likelihood would have been liquidated had his administration not kept them above water with a government-led rescue in 2009 is pretty popular in ohio. popularity is an obstacle to mitt romney who opposed a key part of the rescue when initiated by the bush administration and now finds himself with a stubborn polling deficit in a state he more or less has to win to win the presidency. so, the romney campaign has e a escalated their attempts to rewrite the history of the auto rescue and are now simply making things up about the current auto industry that exists today. they claim that president obama sold chrysler to italians who plan to build jeeps in china. >> who will do more for the auto industry? not barack obama, fact checkers confirm his attacks on mitt romney are false. the truth? mitt romney has a plan to help the auto industry. he's supported by lee iacocca and "the detroit news." obama took gm into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> i'm mitt r
're behaving in ohio with the ads they've put on, this whole thing about chrysler and jeep. they're behaving -- there's an element of apparent desperation on their part. they seem to be throwing a lot of stuff at the wall in ohio which suggests a certain amount of if not desperation, they have a sense that they're losing there. >> mark, you look at the quinnipiac poll this morning, and you see it's still a five-point lead. we've got less than a week till the election. you look at the internals. over 50% of the people there think that in ohio, the economy's getting better. i'm underlining this. because i'm not saying mitt romney can't win. but if you take ohio off the table for mitt romney and it's really close, it's really, really close to being off the table for mitt romney unless there is some massive reaganlike landslide the last week, then suddenly mitt romney's pathway to 270 gets very, very narrow. he's got to run the board or he's got to expand the map. >> and don't forget virginia which also, according to most of the recent polling data, is not at all a sure thing for the president,
sold chrysler to italians that are going to build jeeps in china. a lot of push back from the obama campaign. the ad was dismissed by our last guest. i want to get your thoughts. guest: chrysler has admitted they are going to open a plant in china. they are going to manufacture jeeps in italy they are going to ship to china. why are we not manufacturing them in ohio? i think that is the issue that mitt romney, governor romney, was attempting to promote. the fact of the matter is that we have a substantial loss of automobile manufacturing jobs in ohio between 2008 when the 2011. we have not recovered some of those jobs. some of those jobs, we have recovered. to say that chrysler is not going to be producing jeeps in china is incorrect, because they have admitted that they are going to open a plant in china. they are in the process of doing the right now. >> you think governor romney could have done a better job in how he presented that ad? it has gotten a lot of a pushcart. vice-president biden called it "flagrantly dishonest." he said, >guest: i am not going to get into individual a
. just to the point where chrysler is saying no! we're not doing -- you're actually slandering us here. >> stephanie: that's what i mean. is the maybe stream media going -- is the mainstream media -- blatant lies like that. chrysler had to say no. that's so blatant. he's in ohio and he says -- let's see. a news story about chrysler's plans to open a plant in china. he said the company's thinking of moving all production to china. he'll prevent such action by fighting for every job in america. that's not what the story said. in fact, it says they're planning to open a chinese factory where it will make a popular line, jeep for chinese consumers. chrysler isn't planning on shipping production away. it will add factories in china to keep up with the nation's growing demand for automobiles. >> romney is sending jobs over to china from illinois the day before the election. >> but the other thing is that he didn't just say this. he put out -- his campaign put out an ad saying it. so it wasn't just some slip of the
. the real jeep news that day was actually that chrysler announced it was adding 1100 new jobs in the u.s. here. making jeeps in detroit. jeep grand cherokees. and chrysler says it could hire almost as many people at another plant in warren, michigan. in ohio crisler is investing half a billion dollars in its toledo plant and hiring 1100 workers. but mitt romney got up that said defiance, ohio, and said he read somewhere that jeep is moving all of its production jobs to china. all of them. that's ridiculous. what is he talking about? it's embarrassing for mr. romney, right? why on god's great campaign trail would mitt romney get up in front of 12,000 people in ohio and tell them the auto bailout actually hasn't helped you at all. your jobs making jeeps are going to china. i read it somewhere. where's this story he said he read somewhere? we found it. here it is. he was apparently trolling the nether regions of the right-wing press. he found it on a washington examiner blog post, which reported, quote, jeep, an obama favorite, looks to shift production to china. a move that would crash t
of the -- the ceos of chrysler and gm had to come out and say you're lie being us and you're going to hurt our sales with your lies. he's not really keeping up with business there, but i have to tell you also, earlier this week he got subsumed by the sandy coverage as it should have, but i put out a story with another videotape in which mitt romney talking to a fund-raiser earlier this year says, you know, there's a better business environment in china than the united states. well, why is that? it's because they have no worker protections, no environmental -- >> they have no human rights, david. >> and low wages. so is he saying he wants to bring us back to that point? like to the days of cal coolidge as joy suggests? >> david, yes. >> there's a lot going on that doesn't compute and when it does compute it's rather scary. >> there's something called the moonlight magnolia theory of economics. the south practices it right now. when you strip away unions and you can lower wages, businesses are more profitable. that's why wall street -- you see the stock market tick up when companies lay people off bec
by lee iacoca and the detroit news. obama sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps? china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> romney: i'm mitt romney and i approve this message. >> bill: james what is the romney campaign's response to the fact checking? >> they haven't spoken publicly about it. they have kept it very low-key, i think they hoped that no one would really notice. there is unquestionably damage done to mitt romney because of his opposition to the auto bailout. the obama campaign is aggressively running ads around romney saying let detroit go bankrupt. >> bill: uh-huh. >> and romney knows he needs to deal with it. yesterday romney had three events, spoke about 25 minutes at each of them didn't say a word about the bailout or anything like that, and at each event any obama response was the auto bailout. and chrysler denies the claim in that ad that they are going to be sending jeep jobs to china. and portman introducing romney noted that he had supported the auto bailout when it happened and then made that whole pitch which
industry. he's supported by the detroit news. obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy. >> before i get you to comment on it. i'm going to go to the obama ad. it is a response to this ad. obama ad called collapsed. it's a rebutle to this ad. >> when the auto industry faced collapse, mitt romney turned his back. even the conservative detroit news criticized romney for wrongheadedness on the bailout. and now, after romney's false claim of jeep out sourcing to china. >> here's what i want to know. i don't know the answer. and this is a good example. one of them's got to be wrong. who is wrong? >> well , the romney ad is technically true but misleading. one of the things he claims, it goes on to say that chrysler is going to increase production of jeeps in china. and turns out they are increasing production of jeeps in the u.s. and in china. and you are left with the misleading impression that they are moving jobs from the u.s. to china. in fact, they are increasing production in both places. >> okay. >> there's another couple factors. one is the detroit news of romney. romney 's right to s
economic news can have undesirable consequences. this week chrysler will add 1100 workers in detroit. the plant hassed a workers on overtime for months, is now adding a third crew so they can be operational for more hours in the day. it's hard to imagine these new jobs without chrysler and chrysler without the auto rescue. but because the new vehicles, these workers will be making our suvs, so while the comeback is good in the short term, it's only good on for all of us in the long time if the industry goes through a revolution that dramatically increases the efficiency and reduces the emissions of the cars it produces. want to find out what my guests think you should know for the coming week -- >> i think one of the things that a we've been discussing has been there's more drips out of the benghazi situation. there was a cia annex he is that asked for military intervention and were denied three times. unclear whether it was the pentagon, the president. who those. but i think we'll see more drips from that next week and that will continue to hit the headlines. >> we've covered bengha
. >> reporter: and ryan fought back hard. >> president obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy. taxpayers still stand to lose billion billions of dollars from the president's managed bankruptcy. >> reporter: romney has been on the defensive for months on his position on auto bailout, now taking it right to the president. their skirmishes back and forth about this issue on the auto industry show how important it is, especially in ohio, which could hold the key to the white house. there are 800,000 people in jobs related to the auto industry in that state. charlie and norah, they could be decisive. >> jan crawford, thank you so much. national journal white house correspondent major garret is here. let's talk about what jan was just reporting on. why has the fight on the auto bailout gotten so nasty here in the end? >> the obama campaign -- from the romney/ryan ticket that the bailout is sending jobs to china. production may eventually be in china on jeeps. as chrysler and gm have pointed out, jeep, which is a chrysler brand, and gm, also producing autos in northern ohio, aren't shrinking th
obama chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. >> i'm mitt romney and i approve this for a minute. >> forget for a moment that general motors and chrysler have decried this ad as false or misleading but in the ad governor romney says he has a plan for the auto industry. i'm curious what that is and why we haven't heard much about it until now until a week before the election. >> as ad itself says, lee iacocca and major executives support governor romney, and i'd point out people who were on the obama economic council are supporting mitt romney because he does have a plan on day one to turn this country around in terms of jobs. with the auto economy and everything else, you need to put people back to work, and on day one he's going to get the energy economy going and allow us to have the keystone pipeline open up, be able to drill offshore in my home state of virginia so we can get those good jobs going, and then he is going to, you know, increase economic opportunity for everybody, so that's why he's having so many people, even people on the president's own econo
jobs, and not just at gm, chrysler and their dealerships, but in auto parts manufacturing all over the country. >> reporter: today the lords town plant churns out the chevrolet cruz, the country's best selling compaq car, to meet demands it's gone from one shift a day to three, and round-the-clock production. dave green is president of the local united auto workers union. >> but the whole economy will benefit from this because our parts suppliers, the people who work there are out shopping at the stores, they are paying tacks, you know, they're investing in their community. >> reporter: the auto industry employs one out of every eight workers in the state. youngstown is the largest city in the region and reaped many of the benefits. it's not just auto breathing new life into northeast ohio. in youngstown, the once declining steel industry has come back. and the evidence is french-owned bn m-star which makes field tube force natural gas drilling. the company chose youngstown for its $1 billion expansion. you might not think of ohio as an energy powerhouse, but it is on the verge of
